ABOUT

ABOUT

My name is Sharinda Nathaliya Wolffers, working under the artist name Nathaliya Wolff. I am a visual maker, art educator, cultural and artistic researcher, and curator of community programming, with a particular focus on cultural heritage, traditional knowledge, collective memory, and ethnographic research. Committed to lifelong learning and continuous artistic research, my practice moves across film, photography, cyanotype, writing, heritage research, and community-based practices, connecting personal narratives to broader cultural, social, and historical contexts.

Within my practice, I use film and photography as artistic media and as methods of visual and ethnographic research. Through observation, encounter, dialogue, documentation, and visual experimentation, I explore cultural practices, traditional knowledge, places, rituals, and lived experiences, while remaining attentive to the relationship between maker, subject, and context. Rather than approaching images as neutral documentation, I am interested in how visual narratives can generate, transmit, and question knowledge.

Born in Sri Lanka and adopted to the Netherlands, I develop projects that create space for reconnection, cultural exploration, and the transmission and reclamation of heritage. My work engages with traditional knowledge, lived experience, archival, historical, and ethnographic research, while bringing forward histories and perspectives that have often remained invisible. Based in the Netherlands, my practice unfolds both locally and internationally.

One of the projects emerging from this practice is Sri Lanka Fest, an arts-educational and cultural heritage platform that brings together traditional knowledge, artistic research, cultural experience, encounter, and knowledge exchange. Developed through research and in collaboration with Sri Lankan knowledge holders, makers, and professionals, each edition explores a different aspect of Sri Lankan culture and heritage through film, food, traditional and contemporary artistic practices, workshops, dialogue, and collective reflection. Rather than defining what Sri Lanka or cultural heritage should mean to someone, the platform creates space for different experiences, perspectives, and forms of connection.

Film and visual research form an important part of this approach. During multiple journeys to Sri Lanka, I have documented and researched nature, art, rituals, people, places, and cultural practices through photography and film. This research informed the experimental film Aluth Avurudu, created as the visual and educational starting point for the first edition of Sri Lanka Fest. Through image, sound, symbolism, observation, and lived experience, the film explores Sri Lankan cultural practices and traditional knowledge, using ethnographic and artistic research as a basis for visual knowledge transmission.

At the same time, my own life transformed profoundly through the search for my family, which led to reuniting with my mother in Sri Lanka and finding my brother, who lives in Sweden. This personal journey of discovery, and the universal longing for belonging, also formed the basis for my Rotterdam portrait in the art installation Save Me From This Cold by Martin and Inge Riebeek, showcased at FENIX, the art museum about migration in Rotterdam.

My experience within the arts and education sectors has been shaped by, among others, my work with Kunsthal Rotterdam. During my internship in the Public and Education department, I worked on exhibitions and programs including Keith Haring: The Political Line and the first edition of All You Can Art with Tirzo Martha and David Bade. I later returned as a project member for the opening of Peter Lindbergh: A Different Vision on Fashion Photography.

Bringing together lived experience, arts education, cultural heritage, and years of artistic, ethnographic, and interdisciplinary research, I developed Ripple of Remembrance: an educational and artistic methodology for intercountry adoptees and people navigating grief and loss, in which artistic research, lived experience, reculturation, cultural heritage, memory, and reflection come together.

Within this practice, I use cyanotype as a medium to create personal blueprints of memory. Moments, journeys, places, photographs, botanical materials, and symbols can be brought together into a physical image. Through my own practice, I discovered that this process is not only deeply meaningful to me, but can also offer others a safe and powerful space to pause, make room for acceptance, reflect on their own narratives, and explore connections to memory, heritage, and belonging.

At the heart of these sessions is an artistic and reflective process in which making, memory, lived experience, and cultural heritage come together. Through art, space can emerge to make personal experiences tangible, reflect on what has been carried through life, open up new perspectives, and form lasting connections with memory, roots, cultural heritage, and identity.

A Different Vision on Fashion Photography.
